As a global media and entertainment company specialising in content creation and distribution, the CANAL+ group is conscious of the environmental, social and corporate governance impact it can have, and of its responsibility to carry out its commitments both internally, and also to its various audiences.

It is committed to maintaining the highest standards of ethics, in line with international standards (UN, ILO, OECD).

Building on its cultural commitments, the group has built its sustainability policy around three pillars, aimed at ensuring an inclusive and ethical work environment for the group’s employees and acting responsibly to create and distribute rich, impactful content to all its audiences.

GOVERNANCE OF ESG TOPICS

  • The CSR policy and Compliance programmes are driven at the highest level by the Management Board, who closely monitor action plans and performance indicators through dedicated committees.
  • Specific working groups and local coordinators are appointed in each subsidiary to ensure these programmes are widely rolled out.
  • Strategy and results are examined by the Audit & Sustainability committee reporting to the supervisory board.
  • Comprehensive programmes include risk mapping and materiality analysis, third-party assessments, whistleblowing systems, internal controls and audits.

As part of the CANAL+ group approach to ethics and in compliance with the relevant regulations, employees of the group and stakeholders have access to an online whistleblowing system that provides a fully confidential and secure way of reporting violations of the laws, regulations, or breach of our internal principles of conduct.

  • Leadership programs tailored to female talent, such as “Boost’Her” and “Sister’s Day for all”.
  • Active commitment to charters against sexual harassment and sexist behaviour such as Pour les femmes dans les Médias (PFDM) and the #StOpE Charter.
  • Mandatory training on sexual harassment awareness for all employees: 97%* of group employees globally are informed about ordinary sexism and harassment (*end 2023).
  • Employee engagement in training sessions, regular talks, and in-house newsletters to promote inclusivity.
  • Commitment to the employment of disabled workers through comprehensive recruitment, integration and training strategies.
  • Supporting creative teams in incorporating social and environmental themes in media content.
  • Comprehensive training programme on ethics and anti-corruption: 96%* and 98%* of the group’s employees are informed about anti-corruption, transparency, human rights and environmental protection in the supply chain (*end 2023).
  • CANAL+ Solidarity: a skill sponsorship programme allowing employees to volunteer with non-profit organisations during work hours.
  • Launch of the first Comptoir Café Joyeux Inside in the world at CANAL+ ONE, enabling 4 employees with mental disabilities to work at the heart of our French headquarters.
  • Dailymotion’s initiatives such as bursaries and work placements for female students at ADA tech school to study computer science.

IN FRONT AND BEHIND OF THE CAMERA: DIVERSE, IMPACTFUL TALENT PROMOTES ACCESSIBLE CULTURE AND CONTENT

  • Supporting local production and diverse talent in Europe, Africa, and Southeast Asia with broader global distribution.
  • Promoting female talent in scriptwriting, producing, and acting: 34%* of the French films financed by the group were directed by women (*in 2023) along with a €1 million support fund for ambitious projects by female filmmakers.
  • Internal AI tools to monitor gender equality in media representation, focusing on speaking time for women.
  • Partnerships with schools to promote diversity. The Vivendi Foundation, to whose actions the CANAL+ group actively contributes, trained over 10,000 creative and cultural professionals from diverse backgrounds in 2023.
  • Dedicated sections on myCANAL, for example HELLO for LGBTQIA+ and CANAL+ voit Green for environmental themes.
  • Impactful content such as PLASTIC ODYSSEY, which explores global plastic pollution, VIVANTE(S) and UNBREAKABLE VOWS, a story about domestic violence and feminicides, or L’EPOPÉE JOYEUSE, a piece discussing the importance of workplace inclusion for people with disabilities.
  • Dailymotion monthly rewards for impactful content creators through support programs and thematic grants.
  • Ensuring content accessibility through subtitles, sign language translation, audio descriptions, and dyslexia-friendly subtitles (Dystitles).

  • Accessibility enhancements at live performance venues such as L’Olympia in Paris and the CanalOlympia in Africa.
  • Initiatives like Create Joy and Orphée support personal development and inclusion for disadvantaged groups, benefitting over 20,000 individuals in 2023.
  • Youth awards at the Cinema for change festival, engaging over 15,000 children in Europe and Africa in film selection and discussion.

RESPONSIBLE FOOTPRINT OF OPERATIONS THROUGHOUT THE VALUE CHAIN

  • Commitment to a science-based decarbonisation pathway, actively reducing CO2 emissions across all scopes.
  • Adoption of sustainable building practices and energy-efficient technologies, achieving significant reductions in electricity consumption and increasing the use of renewable energy sources (the group’s worldwide electricity consumption was more than 25% lower than the prior five years, and nearly 60% of the group’s electricity consumption was from renewable sources in 2023).
  • Implementation of a business travel policy to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable mobility.
  • Participating in external initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Implementing circular economy and eco-design principles for our equipment: recycling and refurbishing set-top boxes and reducing plastic usage: 60%* of set-top boxes supplied to French subscribers are refurbished boxes (*in 2023) while the new generation of set-boxes emits 40% less greenhouse gases than the previous one.
  • Green IT initiatives at Dailymotion to enhance energy efficiency infrastructure.
  • Commitment to eco-responsible filming practices through the ECOPROD association. The CANAL+ group is committed to ensuring that 100% of Créations Originales and Décalées produced in France are ECOPROD-labelled, while 100% of French entertainment programs are committed to an eco-production approach.
  • More efficient encoding formats reduce bandwidth use, cutting video stream carbon emissions by 15% for sports and up to 40% for films.
  • Upholding the highest standards for information fairness, independence and pluralism.
  • Secure spaces and parental control tools to ensure appropriate content for young audiences.
